When being a Medical Secretary, you do many things in an office.

A lot of the work that you would do in an office bascially consists of helping out doctors and patients. Below is a list:

  • File medical forms
  • Answer telephones and set up appointments for sick people. Then the appointments get sent to the doctor and then they know what time the patient is going to be there.
  • A lot of Medical Secretaries work in a family doctor office, or a hospital, even at a dentist office to set up appointments, organize doctors work, and take care of the billing from people who pay when they go for their appointment.

Usually, when you are a medical secretary, you are set up in an office like facility with one or two other secretaries to help answer phones and look for patients files when they sign in. You work with computers a lot also! Usually most secretaries work the same hours that a regular family doctor works. 5 days a week and 9-10 hour days. Hours usually are about 8:00 am-5:00 pm and closed on weekends. On the other hand, if you were a hospital secretary you could easily get put on midnight shifts or night shifts because most emergency hospital facilities are open 24/7.
